Having an Attitude of Gratitude

What if I told you that scientists had discovered a pill that could decrease pain, decrease depression, decrease aggression, and at the same time improve your self-esteem and mental resilience? What would that pill be? Oh and definite side effects include bouts of happiness and more positive relationships!

So what would it be called?

Well it does exist. Kind of. But it wasn’t created in a lab. And unfortunately it’s not in pill form. If it were in pill form it might be called Gratitudizen.

Its gratitude, the #2 exercise on the 30 DAY Healthy & Happy Exercise calendar. This exercise is really an inner-cise because its a personal thing for you to write in your journal. It's like a way to see, remember and practice it over time.

The effects are far reaching. One study demonstrated that higher levels of gratitude contributed to lower rates of PTSD for vietnam vets, and another study showed higher resilience measures for victims of 911. See a link to the studies below.

But there other ways to practice gratitude too. Robert Emmons, a UC Davis professor and researcher, talks about a family that labels glass jars with “abundance,” “blessings” and “gratitude.” Whenever the jars get full of money the kids donate them to a needy person or family in the community.

Without a practice, it's so easy to drift into the negativity mindset. It's so easy to forget about waking up this morning in warm bed or taking a warm shower. If you’re going to work, you have a job. If you have a business there are people, partners and staff that believe in you.

Gratitude and hedonic and eudaimonic well-being in Vietnam war veterans [study]

Resilience and Emotions Following the Terrorist Attacks on the United States on Sept11th, 2001 [study]

People need to hear you say, Thank you. We all need to feel appreciated, and loved. Gratitude towards another is a moment in time we can share with someone to make their day and ours a bit brighter.

Thank your friends, thank your spouses, thank your co-workers, thank God, thank your children. Watch their faces light up with memory blocks that remind them that they are loved. Gratitude reminds us to want the things we have.

So today’s message is to count your blessings and make your blessings count.

If you don’t have a journal yet, write someone a thank you note or thank you sticky note. Better yet, tell them personally.

There are so many opportunities to show gratitude. Let’s not pass them by.

So from me to you THANK YOU for listening today.

See you tomorrow.
