Do You Know What the Word "Diet" Means?
The word diet comes from the Greek "diaita," which means daily habit or lifestyle.
So lets consider your daily habits or even the way you’ve styled your life. And I don’t just mean your food diet, but your entertainment diet, your inspirational diet, your self-care diet.
Consider the way you’ve styled different domains of your life. Embedded in this consideration is the concept of intention, the idea that you can exercise the power to decide. Just like you pick the food that goes in your mouth, you pick the shows you watch, the friends and partners you spend time with, and the job you do. If that is true, then indirectly you have also chosen some of the results of those decisions because, as adults, we have chosen the environments we live in. These environments reflect not only the decision we made but the decisions we continue to make.
For instance, some of your friends are a function of, among other things, where you have chosen to to work or live. Had you chosen another job or location, it's entirely possible that you would have different close friends. Sure there is an element of chance and timing in everything, but if we put the locus of control squarely on you, and what is within your power to affect, from a certain point of view, you chose the circumstances. And that decision pre-selected your available options from which you’d make your next choice.
When you think about all the decisions or circumstances that brought you to where you are today from not just you but your parents, and grand parents, it can be mind-boggling. But this isn’t about judging the past, it's about learning and moving forward. So how can you deliberately style your life today to bring you more of what you want? What can you add to your daily habits to bring you closer to the outcomes you’d prefer? Remember small steps bring you closer too.
When you consider the different domains of your life and what you want to improve, consider also the tremendous power you have to affect your environment that produces those effects. It's these thoughts, these pre-decisions that can help us be a little bit more intentional, a lot more awake to the options that are in alignment with who we say we want to be.
Your imagination is the only limit, but one suggestion might be a journal - if only for the benefit of cataloging your thoughts and the alternate outcomes you'd like. A journal is the place where you learn more about you and the patterns on which your daily habits may form. Writing these down effectively sears into your brain whatever you're learning . When you review your notes you’ll quickly glean what's important and what's less so. You may even see patterns in behavior that might surprise you.
Coaches and trainers do this for you. The good ones can help you bridge the gap between your current reality and what you aspire to become. Starting a journal is a great way to do a similar thing. It creates accountability for yourself and a way to observe you being you. Add thoughts about your 5K training results each week or your rest - whatever singular thing you want to focus on first. Give it a try for a month and share what you think.
See you next time!
